Public Speaking? Worried or Happy?

Public speaking can be defined as speaking in front of public. Seminar, workshop, presentation, debate, speech can be categorized into public speaking activity. There will be two components within the public speaking activity, there will be a speaker or in other word it is called as public speaker, that is the one who gets in charge to speak in front of some people. The second one is audience, those who see the performance of a public speaker and as the ones who might be active in participating in the public speaking activity, such as asking or giving some comments. Seeing this nature of a public speaker, it seems not really easy to be the centre of public in presenting something. Some might be worried whether he/she can run public speaking smoothly or not. But, some might be happy to share information with others. So,what should we do? Well, to be a good public speaker, there are some elements that should be fulfiled. Those elements are abbreviated into 3M. 3M here is not about Menguras, Menutup, Menimbun as the principle of dengue symptoms, but rather Manner, Matter, and Method. Now, let’s check one by one.

First 3M element is Manner, in this case, manner is dealing with the way on how someone speaks. This element covers confidence, eye contact, gesture, and fluency. Therefore, to be able to perform as it is required, a public speaker should be ready to manage him/herself since manner here represents how good a public speaker prepares for his/her performance.

Second M is about Matter. Matter is concern on the content of the material which is going to be delivered. A good matter should contain the principle of 5W+1H (What, When, Where, Who, Why+How). A good public speaker must understand well the content or issue being discussed before performing or speaking in front of public. If it is not, he/she will find some difficulties in facing the response of the audience when they are curious about some unclear information and are willing to deliver some questions.

The last M is called Method. Method is connected to the rule that should be obeyed to create the more structurized presentation. In this case, method consists of opening, content, and closing. Opening is the main part when someone presents something since there is a statement that first impression is the starting point to grab attention. This means that, a good speaker must create an interesting opening to get the attention from audience. After opening, a speaker can move to the content of the presentation which should be delivered. To move to the content, a speaker can pass some questions related to the intended material being delivered and directly take in charge to explain it in detail. After explaining the content, a speaker can go in sum of the explained material and move to the closing, such as by offering question and suggestion session.

            In brief, those three priciples of being a good public speaker must be understood by everyone for the shake of a good and successful presentation. 3M are related to each other and they can’t be separated. However, 3M is just a principle of public speaking theoretically, how smooth the presentation will be depends on the speaker him/herself. They can go with these principles and may give some improvisation during their presentation as well to give more amazing and memorable presentation for the audience
